About

Welcome! My name is Christian W. Koch. I’m a multimedia developer born in Caracas, Venezuela, currently living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. My interests include, in no particular order, Linux (mainly Ubuntu), web development, game development, video editing, graphic design and music composition.

Currently, my daily work is mostly graphic desing, web development and system administration. I work at a, mostly, prepress and digital printing company in Miramar, FL. I am supposed to be the Art Director, or at least that’s what they hired me for, but the goal was to develop the web design/development department. As time has gone by, it has been 2 years, I have become their system administrator as well, illuminating their life and replacing their windows servers with linux servers; they couldn’t be happier.

As I said before, I was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. My parents were german, so my first language was german, then spanish, then english (nowadays I prefer to communicate in english). My father was a chemical engineering professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, where I studied computer science for a year, and because of this I had access to computers, and technology in general, from a very early age. My passion has always been programming, thanks to my father, who noticed that I liked video games and told me one day “here, take this manual; if you like games, make them,” handing me a BASIC manual with my first computer, a ZX81. I was hooked.

Even though I would really like to spend my time developing games, my work is mostly related to web development. I have worked with basically every technology that has come out for the web since it was created, due to the fact that I like to tinker with new things. Today, however, I prefer to work with Python and Django in particular; though I keep a very close eye on Ruby on Rails, thanks to Sebans.

Also, as I mentioned above, I was hired by my current employer to be the senior graphic designer. Since I was a kid I always like the arts; I was always drawing and painting. Now, I owe my serious designer skills to Luis, my design master. He’s one of the people that I have most respect for, even though I don’t think he really realizes this. We met through a crazy mexican, who is my sister’s brother-in-law. Luis had, and still has, mad design skills, but back then he was lacking web development skills; so one day we decided to teach each other. He’s now a kick-ass web guru, and I believe (just ask some of my customers) that I kick some ass doing graphic design. Thanks gordo, cómprame algo! :)

Ok, enough about me. Now to some information about this website…

I welcome all comments from everybody. However, I reserve the right to remove any comment that I deem offensive to me or to any particular ethnic or religious group. I also dislike comments advertising products and/or services, unless they are in the context of the posts. As a general rule, be courteous and respectful; avoid saying something that you might regret or that would otherwise offend you if you were the recipient of such comment. So, keep it constructive. Oh, by the way, your comments will be placed in a queue…

Colophon

This site is made 50/50 on linux and mac. I test on both environmenst, and eventually on windows. Speaking of windows, I have noticed that some pages and snippets look funky or incorrect on internet explorer. If you are using IE, sorry, but use a real browser. If you insist on using windows, go ahead and install Firefox; maybe IE 8 will be a little better. As far as the blog goes, it is currently running on WordPress using the white multilingual Hemingway theme. hopefully soon the blog should move to a custom blog built with Django, more on that later.
